Museums in Chania

The Archeological Museum of Chania, housed in the Church of St Francis (21 Halidon St, tel. no. 0821-20334), has a fine collection of finds dating from the Neolithic times to the Roman period, all from the Chania area and western Crete.

The Historical Archive and the Museum of Crete are in a new-Classical building at 20 Sfakianaki St (tel. no. 22606); they have on show various objects and collections of historical interest, and the archives and personal effects of Eleftherios Venizelos.

The Folklore Museum, in a hall which forms part of the Municipal Library (Kydonias Ave., tel. no. 23273), has collections of folk art, objects from every day life and photographs.

The Municipal Library is located in the Municipal Building (Kydonias Ave., tel. no. 23273) and includes among its other important collections the personal library of Eleftherios Venizelos.

The Maritime Museum is in an old building belonging to the Firkas Fortress(tel. no. 26437); among its collections of items relating to the history of the Greek navy are models of ships from antiquity down to modern times.
