The Prefecture of Chania

Chania is the most westerly prefecture of Crete, with towering mountain massifs, deep gorges and a coastline with both steep cliffs and fine beaches. In the north of the Prefecture is the large plain of Chania, with the White Mountains on the three sides of it.

Apart from the natural beauties, the Prefecture of Chania also has numerous archeological sites and other places connected with history.

The area of the Prefecture is 2375 square kilometers. Its capital is Chania, and it is divided into five sub prefectures: Kydonia, Apokoronou, Kissamos, Selino and Sfakia.

The islets of Gavdos and Gavdopoula, far out in the Libyan Sea, also belong to the Prefecture of Chania.
